Donald H. “Don” George

Donald H. “Don” George, age 82, passed away Wednesday, October 26, 2016, at the Meade District Hospital, Meade, Kansas.
 
He was born September 18, 1934, at Altus, Oklahoma, the son of Henry Ray and Vera Ethel (Hall) George.  As a young boy he attended the Wellington school system, graduating from Wellington High School in 1952.  He later attended Kansas State University.  In 1954, he joined the United States Navy, serving for four years.  During this time he was stationed in California and Guam before serving shipboard taking him to Japan, Hong Kong, and Hawaii.  After his discharge in 1957, he entered the Wichita Technical School studying electronics.  After his schooling, he began working for Boeing Aircraft Corporation for several years before accepting a job in the Modification and Service Department of Cessna Aircraft Corporation.  In 1983, he moved to Plains and began his career in farming.
 
He was a member of the Plains Friends Church, the National Woodcarvers Association, and the  Great Plains Wood Carvers..  He enjoyed woodcarving, collecting stamps, fishing, camping, and spending time with his family and friends.
 
On December 27, 1964, he married Lelia May Pope at the Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church in Wichita, Kansas.  She survives.
 
Other survivors include:
 A daughter,                                    Traci Lynn Ryan and husband Dallas of Liberal, Kansas
 
Two grandsons,                         Tyler and Michael Ryan of Liberal, Kansas
 
He is preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Raymond George, and a sister Vera Fern Haymaker.
 
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday October 31, 2016, at the Plains Friends Church, Plains.  Friends may call from 1:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Sunday with the family present from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Fidler-Orme-Bachman Mortuary, Meade.  Interment will follow in the Plains Cemetery, Plains.
 
The family would welcome memorials to the Plains Friends Church or the Meade District Hospital in care of the funeral home.
