Carlos (Charlie) O. Mendoza

Joe Denoyer - June 15, 2017 4:05 pm

Carlos (Charlie) O. Mendoza died at 8:35 p.m., Tuesday, June 13, 2017, in Wichita, Kansas, following a brief illness. Charlie was born July 19, 1936, in Vernon, Texas, the son of Blas and Anita (Ornelas) Mendoza.

Charlie spent his early adult life in Grand Island, Nebraska, working at Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant. Prior to his death, he resided with Mosaic in Garden City, Kansas, for over 20 years.

Charlie was a wonderful son, brother, father and uncle. He was loved by all who knew him – a very pleasant and good-natured man who did not know a stranger and whose passion was playing the guitar and listening to his idol, Elvis Presley. He was also an avid car enthusiast.

He is survived by his daughter, Carol Jean Mendoza; two grandchildren, John and Amanda; two great-grandchildren, Gabriel and Misty all of Bayard, Nebraska; siblings, Blas Mendoza and wife, Nancy of Kearney, Nebraska, Mary Pena of Ulysses, Kansas, Delia Quintero of Vernon, Texas, Elvira (Vera) Tristan and husband, Sergio of Sun City, Arizona, Robert Mendoza and wife, Charlene of Gering, Nebraska, Mary Helen Davila and husband, Armando of Lubbock, Texas; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Charlie is preceded in death by his parents; his son, Johnny Lee; siblings Bentura (Ben) Mendoza, Frank Mendoza, Lupe Mendoza and Amalia (Molly) Magdaleno.

Vigil and rosary service will be held Monday, June 19, 2017, at 7:00 PM and funeral mass will be held at 10:00 AM Tuesday, June 20, 2017, at Mary, Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Ulysses, Kansas, with Reverend Peter Fernandez officiating. Interment will follow at the Ulysses Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be given to Mosaic or Charlie Mendoza Memorial Fund in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W. Grant Ave, Ulysses, KS 67880.
