Betty Jean Herbel

Betty Jean Herbel, 84, of Hooker, Oklahoma passed away October 31, 2017 at her home.

Betty was born June 29, 1933 in Baker, Oklahoma on the family farm, the daughter of Fred and Neola Geist Meng. She attended school at the Hooker Schools until her senior year when she attended and graduated from Goodwell High School with the Class of 1951. She then attended University of Oklahoma.

She returned to Hooker and began working for Mr. Wilson at the First National Bank of Hooker, working there for many years.

On May 22, 1956, in Clayton, New Mexico, Betty was united in marriage to Edwin Herbel. They made Hooker their home.

Betty bought the local flower shop and named it “Every Bloomin’ Thing” which she ran for five years.

She was a member of St. Lutheran Church in Hooker, Lamplighters, Ladies Aid, Hagolu, Rose Garden Flower Club and Bridge Club.

Betty was an avid and knowledgeable college basketball fan, she loved to hand quilt, enjoyed flowers and her garden, jigsaw puzzles and reading. Her love was her family and her grandkids.

Preceded in death by her parents, her husband Edwin in 2013, her sister-in-law, Pat Meng.

Survivors include one son, James Herbel of Hooker, Oklahoma; two daughters, Cynthia Rapp of Hutchinson, Kansas and April Herbel of Hooker, Oklahoma; five grandchildren, Valerie Armstrong and her husband Eric of Wichita, Kansas, Monica Lemmon and her husband Jassen of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Tara Haines and her husband Avery of Hooker, Jennifer Herbel of Hooker, Oklahoma and Taylor Herbel of Belleville, Texas; 7 great grandchildren, Kaylie & Hannah Armstrong, Caitlin, Afton and Abram Lemmon Wiley and Rowan Haines; brother, Earl Dean Meng of Weatherford, Texas.

 Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, November 4, 2017 at St. John Lutheran Church with Rev. Conrad Oehlert officiating. Interment will be in the Hooker Cemetery directed by Roberts Brothers Funeral Home in Hooker, Oklahoma.

Memorials are suggested to the Hooker Ambulance Association and may be left at Roberts Brothers Funeral Home, Box 745, Hooker, Oklahoma 73945.
