NW Kansas Gets New Year’s Snow

KSCB News - January 1, 2011 8:52 am

Icy winds have been sweeping parts of northwestern Kansas as the region gets its first substantial snow of the winter season.

Visibility was sharply reduced on many roads as northwesterly winds gusting to 33 mph whipped up the light, fluffy snow.

The Hays Daily News reports the highest snowfall Friday morning was recorded in Oakley and southwestern Trego County, where four

inches of snow were on the ground.

The National Weather Service reports three inches of snow fell at Goodland by early afternoon.

The afternoon temperature at Goodland fell to 7 degrees — the

expected high for the day, with wind chills as low as 21 below zero.

In Ellis County, emergency management coordinator Bill Ring reminds motorists to carry emergency kits with at least a flashlight, blankets, food and water, a cell phone and a charger.
