KSCB News - October 21, 2009 12:00 am

The KU Osher Lifelong Learning Institute and Seward County Community College/Area Technical School have teamed up to offer two exciting new courses for age 50+ learners in Southwest Kansas.

These short, non-credit courses offer innovative learning opportunities for the sheer joy of learning.

The Dust Bowl Revisited will be offered 2-4 p.m., Nov. 5, 12 and 19 in the Hobble Academic Building, AA137. Stunning film footage along with eyewitness accounts will document the Dust Bowl of the 1930s that devastated areas of Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico and Colorado. The course will examine economic and land use mistakes that created the greatest man-made ecological disaster in our history. Students will discuss the FDR governmentź??s actions to reclaim the land and restore the livelihood of the people of the Dust Bowl.

The second class, ź??Understanding Your Rights: The Supreme Court in American History,ź?ť will be offered from 2-4 p.m., Nov. 17, 24 and Dec. 1 in AA137, Hobble Academic Building. Through Americaź??s history, the Chief Justices of the U.S. Supreme Court have played a central role in the struggle to understand the meaning of freedom. This class will examine the role of the Court in American history and explain the significance of its most important decisions. The first class explains the Courtź??s organization by exploring the differing theories justices have used to interpret the Constitution. The second class investigates the history of the Courtź??s interpretation of the First Amendmentź??s guarantee of the freedom of speech and of religion. The third class discusses the history of the Courtź??s recent rulings on the rights of women and minorities.

These classes require no homework, out-of-class preparation or testing. Each class is $35. Both classes are $55. Enroll online at http://www.osher.ku.edu/seward.php or call toll-free 877-404-5823.
