03/28/2013

Area Special Olympics participants are gearing up for this year's Special Olympics event to be held at the track in Turpin on April 6, starting at 10 a.m.
Carol Batterman of the Panhandle Area Sheltered Workshop, who helps put on and coach in the event, said the participants are always really excited to be involved.
Athletes in the area come from Boise City, Beaver, Turpin, and Guymon.
The competitions include the 50 meter dash, 100 meter dash, softball throw, javelin, shot put, relays, 25 meter walk, 100 meter walk, and standing and running long jumps.
"Everyone that participates in area are able to go to State in May if they so choose," said Batterman.
"We all pretty much work as coaches and with the schools."
Batterman said that at this yearly event, the participants definitely get a good sense of pride as they get to partake in the event.
"They get very excited," Batterman said. "They love to get the ribbons, and then when they go to Stillwater they get the medals for first, second, and third place."
