Water Well Goes Down In Guymon - Water Use Emergency Declared
07/10/2009

Guymon, Oklahoma - The City of Guymon has lost the use of one of their fresh water wells. According to Public Works Director, Ivan Clark, it could take up to 5-7 days to have it pulled and repaired.

Mayor Huckins has signed an emergency proclamation declaring a “Stage 3” water emergency. The goal at this stage is to reduce peak demand by 50% and overall weekly consumption by 25% in order to have adequate water supply to sustain life, health and property protection. Water wells in the City of Guymon are operating on less than 50%storage capacity due to the temporary loss of well #13.

The public is asked to please curtail ALL outdoor water use, including the watering of

lawns until Saturday at 6pm when a new press release will go out to notify the public of

current conditions.

In addition to the immediate emergency, the City of Guymon has imposed an emergency

odd/even watering of lawns that will go into effect on Monday, July 13th. Properties with

odd numbered addresses may water on odd numbered calendar days and properties with

even numbered addresses may water on even numbered calendar days. Watering of

lawns will be after 9:00PM and before 10:00AM. Water that is let to flow into the street

and gutters is prohibited whether by design, mal adjustment to sprinkler system, or usage

during high winds. The City of Guymon will follow the same watering conservation rules

as the public. Any and all water waste is discouraged and prohibited. Water waste is

defined as; any water used that is not necessary for life (human, animals and plants),

health, or to save property. Violation of this resolution is considered a misdemeanor and is punishable with fines up to $200 per violation. Anyone abusing the emergency water usage by overwatering or watering on the wrong days will be given a citation.

With temperatures surpassing 100 degrees and no rain in sight, it will be vital for our fire,

health and property safety that everyone adheres to the emergency proclamation. Please

encourage everyone to cut back as much as possible on ALL water usage until the water

well has been repaired. For more information, you can contact City Hall at 338-0137.
