An Ashland Assault
08/26/2011
Liberal's number two doubles team Lauren Harp and Jackie Nguyen. Kathy Nguyen

The Lady Redskin Varsity Tennis Team hosted a Round-Robin tournament Thursday featuring teams from Ashland, Scott City, and Meade. Ashland proved to be the dominant team winning 1st Place with 28 points followed by Meade with 13 points, Scott City with 10 points, and Liberal with 9 points. With two varsity players from last-year’s team, Liberal is in a rebuilding stage, but every tournament offers valuable lessons to build on in practice. Two bright spots in the tournament featured Kathy Nguyen winning a 3rd Place medal and Shelby Hay winning a 2nd Place medal.

Individual results:

#1 Singles--Kathy Nguyen went 1-2 on the day. She lost to Ashland’s Aspen McCann 0-6, lost to Meade’s Bailey Olvera 4-6, then bounced back to defeat Scott City’s Callan Rose 6-2.

#2 Singles—Shelby Hay went 2-1 finishing 2nd Place. She lost to Ashland’s Canaan Endicott 1-6, defeated Scott City’s Holly Wilcoxson 6-1, then defeated Meade’s Erika Welker 6-0.

#1 Doubles—Lauren Harp/Jacqueline Nguyen went 0-3 on the day. They lost to Ashland’s Woodruff/Golden 2-6, lost to Meade’s Borth/Flowers 2-6, then lost to Scott City’s Kucharik/Vasko 4-6.

#2 Doubles—Melissa Alvarado/Maddie Rees went 1-2 on the day. They lost to Scott City’s Rodugiez/Buehler 3-6, lost to Meade’s Harshberger/Loewen 3-6, then defeated Ashland’s Crafton/Quintana 4-6.

Liberal’s next varsity tournament is in Colby on September 3rd.
