Kansas health officials have confirmed southwest Kansas' first case of swine flu.
A Ford County child displayed symptoms of the virus on Friday, May 8, and a state lab confirmed the diagnosis on Wednesday, Ford County Health Department administrator Angela Elder said Thursday.
"This case is extremely mild, and the child is recovering with no complications," she said. "This case is not any more severe than typical seasonal flu."
The child has been isolated and is being treated at home under parental care.
Elder said that neither the child nor its relatives had been out of the country recently, and authorities do not know how the child came into contact with the virus.
The health department declined to release information that would identify the child, citing privacy concerns.
