Liberal Tennis Falls Short of WAC Goal

The Liberal Boys Varsity Tennis Team falls short at the Western Athletic Conference tournament in Dodge City. With one 1st Place finish, three 2nd Place finishes, and one 4th Place finish, Liberal took 2nd Place as a team with 11 points. Garden City won WAC this year with 14 team points.

 

Individual results:

 

#1 Singles—Duc Nguyen went 4-0 on the day winning 1st Place honors. He defeated Great Bend’s Noel Rodriguez 8-1, defeated Dodge City’s Tanner Miller 8-5, defeated Garden City’s Blake Stucky 8-2, then defeated Hays’ Taylor Ermoian 8-6 to win 1st Place.

 

#2 Singles—Vince Nguyen went 3-1 on the day finishing 2nd Place. He defeated Great Bend’s Ramon Garcia 8-3, defeated Dodce City’s Trevor Brock 8-2, lost to Garden City’s Fidelix Kyaw 6-8, then defeated Hays’ Ben Glassman 8-2 to take 2nd Place.

 

#1 Doubles—Josh Hamilton and Tony Rodriguez went 1-3 on the day finishing 4th Place. They lost to Great Bend’s Moyers/Jacobs 6-8, lost to Dodge City’s Salem/Nichols 6-8, lost to Garden City’s Clarke/Riggs 4-8, then defeated Hays’ McClung/McClung 8-6 to take 4th Place.

 

#2 Doubles—Ozzy Villarreal and Joshep Cotto went 3-1 finishing 2nd Place. They defeated Great Bend’s Neeland/Heeke 8-5, defeated Dodge City’s Kronsbein/Mariegaard 8-3, lost to Garden City’s Keller/Keller 4-8, then defeated Hays’ Wilkens/Brown 8-7 (5) to win 2nd Place.

 

#3 Singles—Ray Wen went 3-1 on the day finishing in 2nd Place. He defeated Great Bend’s Elena Lewis 8-5, defeated Dodge City’s Dylan Woods 8-5, lost to Garden City’s Russell Harp 2-8, then defeated Hays’ Bayron Rivera 8-2 to finish with 2nd Place.

 

Duc Nguyen was voted as Player of the Year in the Western Athletic Conference. Coach Robinson from Garden City was named Coach of the Year.

 

Liberal travels to Salina on Thursday for Regional play.
