Nine Redskin Wrestlers Qualify for State

For the third consecutive season, Liberal sends nine wrestlers to the state meet. The fourth ranked Redskins placed fourth at a regional they hosted Saturday. Third ranked Valley Center won the regional with 152.5 points while second ranked Bishop Carroll took second with 151. Hutchinson took third with 140.5 while the Redskins scored 138.5. The bottom four were Great Bend (93), Hays (81.5), Kapaun (75), and Wichita West (25). LHS junior Adrian Salas (35-6) won the 112 pound division while senior Tyler Sutherland (36-2) won at 152. Senior Adam Meacham at 125 (10-3), senior Victor Cruz at 130 (30-10), and senior heavyweight Ricky Gomez (30-5) made it to the finals. Senior Alan Catalan at 140 (21-9), senior Nate Davis at 189 (30-4), and senior Chuy Torres at 215 (24-18) all placed third. Freshman Justin McPhail at 171 pounds (18-12) took fourth. State begins Friday in Wichita. At 4-a regionals in Ulysses, the Tigers took fourth with 112.5 and Hugoton took eighth with 91.5. Hugoton's Schnitker at 130 and Hill at 140 won regionals. Newell of Ulysses won regionals at 152.
