First International Pancake Racer Signs Up
02/14/2011

The International Pancake Day Race, slated for Mar. 8, has its first entrant, Nicole Schowengerdt, 28. Lots of kids have entered the childrens division, with the six-year-old girls and nine-year-old boys races almost full.
Race sign-ups for all ages continue through Feb. 26, but women who sign up this week for the International Race are eligible for free work-outs at the Wellness Center at Seward Community College/Area Technical School.
The International Race pits the women of Liberal, Kansas, against the ladies of Olney, England. This race is limited to women age 18 or older with a Liberal address who have “domestic duties.” (High school students who are 18 should enter the youth division.)
The field this year is wide open, as last year’s winner, Cheri Bevis, won her third race and is ineligible to compete again. Record-holder Tasha Gallegos, who won in 2009, no longer lives in Liberal.
In addition to the main International Race, other race categories are as follows:

RACE CATEGORIES

Men’s Pacer Race
The Men’s Pacer Race is open to all men ages 18 and older (except those still enrolled in high school, who will run in the youth division).

Women’s Last Chance Race
The Last Chance race is open to women ages 50 and older. (Women who are over 50 may enter the main International Race if they prefer, as long as they meet the Liberal residence requirement.)

Youth Races
This category is for teens ages 14-18 who live in Liberal
. Any entrant under 18 must have a parent or guardian present to sign the entry form.

Children’s Races
Children from ages 3-13 who live in Liberal are eligible, and each age year and gender competes in a separate category. The child’s parent or guardian must be present to sign the entry form.
The number of entrants in each race is limited to 15, and a category will be closed once that limit is reached. There is no entry fee. No late sign-ups will be accepted.

Sign-ups continue through Feb. 26 during regular business hours at the Tourist Information Center, One Yellow Brick Road, across from the Coronado Museum. Hours are 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Friday, and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturdays. For more information on any race, call 620-624-6423.
