Greeley County residents approved a
nonbinding referendum in October to allow large hog confinements in
But that vote wasn't good enough to replace laws on the county's
books forbidding such operations as the one Seaboard Corp. wants to
build in the western Kansas county.
A new election has been
scheduled for Dec. 21, and if approved Seaboard could go ahead with
its plans for up to 120 barns with 1,000 hogs per barn. The company
says the new operation would cost more than $30 million and bring
at least 18 new jobs to the county.
Greeley County voters rejected such hog operations in 1997 in a
nonbinding vote, and the next year the county repealed a 1994
resolution that allowed large hog farms.
