Environmentalists are skeptical of Gov. Mark
Parkinson's promise that Kansas is conducting a fair review of
plans for a new coal-fired power plant.
They said Tuesday they're wary because Parkinson hasn't
explained last week's departure of Department of Health and
Environment Secretary Rod Bremby.
Environmental groups worry that Parkinson pushed Bremby out so
that the coal plant could obtain a permit by year's end. A
Parkinson spokeswoman wouldn't discuss Bremby's departure, saying
it's a personnel matter.
The governor said in a blog posting Monday that he's not
pressuring the department to issue the permit.
Hays-based Sunflower Electric Power Corp. wants to build the
plant outside Holcomb, in southwest Kansas.
