Redskins Win on Flag Day

It wasn't the season Liberal seniors envisioned, but when it ended there were hugs and smiles after the end of an era of their lives. Liberal beat Wichita West 28-0 Friday night at Redskin Field in an ugly flag filled game having no meaning in the 5A playoffs. Liberal finishes 3-6 and West is 2-7. Thirteen seniors were recognized with their parents before the game. Unfortunately one of them, Slader McVey was in jeans. The record setting senior quarterback couldn't play due to an injury from the Hutchinson game. Justin McPhail, Jade Cathey, and Michael Sena played qb from the "Wildcat" formation. LHS amassed 346 yards of offense but were flagged 27 times and committed three turnovers. Liberal held a hapless West team to 53 yards and they were also without their quarterback Dorina Flournoy. LHS head coach Wade Standley says the Skins missed McVey. "Slader makes a difference not only in his play making ability but in getting people lined up and being a leader on the field. We did miss that some. We got a little sloppy in the second half but I'm extremely proud of the way these young men played the game and I'm proud of our seniors tonight."

Senior lineman Pedro Marquez says he'll miss this.

"It's emotional," the senior said. "It's crazy how four years just goes by fast. I can remember my freshman year with coach Schroeder here. Now I'm a senior and it's over in a blink of an eye. I told these younger guys work hard at it even if it's cold and coach Standley is in a bad mood, love the practice."

Isaac Gallegos led Liberal with 140 yards rushing and touchdowns of 12 and six yards in the first half. Jade Cathey caught nine touchdowns this year and 19 for his two year career but rushed for his first score from four yards out helping LHS build a 21-0 lead at halftime. Justin McPhail rushed for 109 yards and his eighth touchdown of the season.

Slader McVey finishes his season with 1,660 passing yards which is second best in LHS history. Last year he had 1,663 yards. McVey had 3,602 career passing yards which is the school record. Mark Grande passed for 2,373 yards during the 2004 and 2005 seasons. Sheldon Pipkin passed for 2,094 yards form 2001-2003. Lamar Chapman passed for 2,023 yards from 1992-1994. McVey finishes third on the school's total yards chart with 4,315 yards. Trace Haskell amassed 4,852 from 1995-1997 and Lamar Chapman put up 4,318 from 1992-1994.

Jade Cathey finished short of his record breaking receiving year last year. He had a school record 46 receptions last year and 45 this year. Last year he had a school record 770 yards. This year Cathey had 691 receiving yards which is third best in school history behind his total last year (770) and Lane Hensley's 714 yards in 2004. Cathey finishes with a school record 91 catches 1461 yards and 19 touchdowns.
