Saints Salvage St. Patrick's Split
03/18/2014

The Seward baseball team salavaged a split of their double header with Garden City Monday at Brent Gould Field.  The Broncbusters won the first game 9-5 in eight innings but a Jordan Leinweber line drive down the right field line scored Brent Williams from second to score the winning run in game two as the Saints scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to win 6-5.  That means Seward wins the series 3-1 and takes the set with Garden City for the fourth consecutive season.

In game one, Seward built a 2-0 lead with two in the third.  Reed Thompson doubled and would scored on a Kevin Connolly RBI single and Brent Williams added a sacrifice fly.  The Busters tied the score with two in the fourht and took the lead with three in the fifth to chase starter Peter Macke after four and two thirds innings.  A Brent Williams homer to center on a day when the wind was blowing out 30 mph made it 5-3.  Seward scored two in the sixth to tie it.  Jordan Leinweber led off the inning with a double and Mason Marshall singled but the ball got by the right fielder allowing Leinweber to score.  Alex White singled home Marshall to tie the game.  Seward had a chance to win it with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the seventh but could not.  Garden scored four runs on four hits and three errors in the eighth.

GCCC scored two in the second and Seward tied the game in the bottom of the inning.  Leinweber singled and Connolly doubled.  Marshall hit a sac fly and Brandon Rix grounded out to drive home the tying run.  Garden added a run in the third and fourth innings against starter Keenan Hall.  The Saints tied the game in the fifth.  Hudson Bilodeau and Alex White singled.  Bilodeau was caught trying to take third on a pitch in the dirt.  Jacob Fuller and Reed Thompson walked.  Brent Williams legged out a fielder's choice with the bases loaded to make it 4-3.  Leinweber provided a clutch RBI single with two outs to tie the game.  The Busters plated a run in the seventh to take the lead 5-4.  With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Fuller blasted a game tying homer over the left field wall to tie the game.  Brent Williams lofted a double to deep right center then Leinweber laced the game winning hit to right.

Seward is 8-4 in the Jayhawk West and 17-11 overall while Garden City is 13-12 and 6-6.

Seward plays host to Frank Phillips Wednesday at 3 for one nine inning game.  Seward returns to conference play at #17 Hutchinson Saturday and Sunday at 1 for double headers on 1270 and kscbnews.net.
