Kan. Republican Leaders Refute Huelskamp Claims

Kansas Republican leaders say a

congressional candidate is engaging in revisionist history by

claiming he was kicked off a state Senate panel for opposing

wasteful spending.

State Senate President Steve Morris and former state Sen. Bill

Bunten - who now is Topeka's mayor - say Sen. Tim Huelskamp was

ousted from the Senate Ways and Means Committee in 2003 because he

wasn't a team player.

The Topeka Capital-Journal reports that Huelskamp's

advertisement claims he was removed from the committee for

"bucking the establishment and fighting wasteful spending."

But Bunten - who replaced Huelskamp on the committee - says the

Fowler Republican couldn't be depended upon by leadership.

A Huelskamp spokesman says Huelskamp wanted to address budget

shortfalls by making cuts, rather than raising taxes as Morris,

Bunten and others wanted to do.
