Southwest Kansas residents are getting their first chance to enjoy the area's newest body of water.
Horsethief Reservoir near Jetmore held an open house Saturday giving neighbors a chance to get a first-hand feel of the new attraction. Visitors could swim, fish and even wakeboard. Construction of a bathroom facility, a parking area near a boat ramp and a day-use area are complete.
The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks has stocked the reservoir with fish. Picnic areas and walking trails have also been set up on site. So far, visitors to the open house say they like what they see.
"Right now It's a little crowded since it's being opened," one visitor said. But future fun at Horsethief Reservoir looked promising for another visitor. "I like it. It's pretty big. It's nice. It's a good open area. It'll be fun to hang out here," he said.
Another open house is set for Sunday from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Once full, the reservoir will cover nearly 500 surface acres. Overnight campgrounds will most likely not be ready until August.
