Liberal Wins WAC Tennis Title

The Liberal Redskin Boys Tennis Team defended its title winning the Western Athletic Conference for the third straight year. With three 1st Place medals, one 3rd Place medal, Coach of the Year, and Player of the Year medals, the Redskins finished their season in grand fashion. Liberal took team honors with 14 points followed by Dodge City with 12, Garden City with 9, Hays with 3, and Great Bend finishing with 1 point.

Individual results:

# 1 Singles—Duc Nguyen went 4-0 finishing 1st Place. He defeated Hays’ Taylor Ermoian 8-2, defeated Garden City’s Andy Larkin 8-4, defeated Dodge City’s Alex Jenker 8-6, then defeated Great Bend’s Nick Moyer 8-2 to take 1st Place. Coaches also voted Duc Nguyen Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year.

#2 Singles—Vince Nguyen went 4-0 finishing 1st Place. He defeated Hays’ Michael Sterling 8-0, defeated Garden City’s Blake Stucky 8-4, defeated Dodge City’s Zak Nicholes 8-0, then defeated Great Bend’s Israel Mendoza 8-1 to finish 1st Place. Vince Nguyen also received votes for player of the year.

#1 Doubles—Josh Hamilton & Hai Vo went 2-2 on the day finishing 3rd Place. They lost to Garden City’s Riggs/Clarke 5-8, lost to Dodge City’s Neidhart/Hutchcraft 3-8, then bounced back to defeat Hays’ McClung/McClung 8-6, they finished with a win over Great Bend’s Bosch/Rodriguez 8-4 to finish 3rd Place.

#2 Doubles—Antonio Rodriguez & Larcyn Carter went 4-0 finishing 1st Place. They defeated Hays’ Beougher/Glassman 8-0, defeated Garden City’s McMillan/Fisher 8-7 (7-4 tie breaker), defeated Dodge City’s Salem/Woods 8-5, then defeated Great Bend’s Jacobs/Neeland 8-0 to finish 1st Place.

#3 Singles—Drew Wills went 1-3 on the day. He lost to Garden City’s Brennan Keller 2-8, lost to Dodge City’s Tanner Miller 5-8, lost to Great Bend’s Ramon Garcia, then defeated Hays’ Max Haverfeild 8-5.
