Liberal Soccer Shoots for More Success
08/28/2013

Navarro and Players

Liberal head coach Lori Navarro is the school's only head boys soccer coach.  She enters her 16th year and She is 203-61-13.  Her teams have won 11 of the past 12 WAC titles and have advanced to 10 of the past 11 final fours in 5A.  So when she wants to make a point, she has all ears from her team.  The point going into the 2013 season is to be more offensive minded.  She insists there is more depth on this team and if her forwards don't take more shots on goal, they will quickly find a spot next to her on the bench.  The lack of offensive firepower plagued LHS much of last season in route to an 11-9-1 season and a 2-6 season in the WAC.  The Redskins atoned for a sluggish season by beating Hays, Great Bend, Salina Central, and Kansas City Harmon in the playoffs before a 3-1 loss to Bishop Miege in the state championship game.

LHS has 58 boys out for soccer.  Some of the key players include Sr. CMF Jason Rios, Sr. F Mizael Gonzalez, Sr. D Elmer Quintana, Sr. D Henry Vela (a move in from Hugoton), Sr. D Osvaldo Ramirez, Jr. D Pedra Lara, and Jr. goalie Jose Alonso.  Navarro says several freshmen are likely to crack the starting lineup this season as well.

Liberal was just 11-9-1 last year but hopes to get back to the level of 16-5, 17-2, and 17-4 as they were in 2011, 2010, and 2009.

Liberal plays Hutchinson in the Wichita South Titan Classic Monday.
