Deven Delivers Walk Off Win
05/04/2013

Deven Nelson delivered single to left and Bret Lewis snaked his way around the catcher's tag as the Saints celebrated a walk off win over Independence at Brent Gould Field Saturday evening.  The Saints beat the Pirates 12-4 and 1-0 to advance to Wichita and Friday's eight team double elimination portion of the Region 6 Tournament.

In game one, the Saints struck early and often even with the wind blowing in from the north at over 35 miles per hour.  Seward scored two in the second and eight in the third to build a 10-0 lead with ace Tyler Wiedenfeld on the mound.  Seward added single runs in the sixth and seventh to lead 12-1.  Indy plated three in the bottom of the seventh to avoid a run rule.  Tyler Wiedenfeld (11-2) ties Tomas Cruz, Jamie Hastings, and Darin Thomas for third all time in wins with seven and one third innings of work.  Adam Guay worked one and two-thirds innings scoreless.  Deven Nelson and Bryson Allen had three hits a piece and Allen had two doubles.  Alex Scanlon, Reid Thompson, Bret Lewis, and Johnny Griffith had two hits a piece including Griffith's two RBI double.

Game two was a pitcher's dual.  Hayden Howard (8-3) pitched all nine innings striking out 12 for the win.  Indy pitcher Jacob Reid pitched seven scoreless innings for the Pirates in the loss.  Seward left 11 runners on base through the first eight innings.  Nelson's single to left scored Lewis for the winning run making Nelson 6-8 on the day.  A wild celebration ensued along the first base line.  Independence took exception to the Seward celebration and words were exchanged after the game but cooler heads prevailed and both teams went back to their dugouts.

Seward plays Kansas City or Butler Friday at a time to be announced in Wichita.
