Irby Wants More Out of Tennis Team
04/16/2013

Bret Irby

Liberal sixth year head boys tennis coach Bret Irby knows what a successful WAC program looks like.  His boys won the WAC in 2008, 2009, and 2010.  The 2011 boys narrowly missed a WAC title, but last year was a rebuilding year for the Redskins.  This year appears to be in that same ilk.  The Redskins return only two players with varsity experience.  But they have 20 players out for the sport and six are freshmen including two starters.  They also enjoy their first season on their new courts at Blue Bonnet Park.

Liberal's Joseph Cotto is LHS's most experienced tennis player and holds down the number one singles spot.  Freshman Mitchell Irby is the number two singles player.  Liberal's number one doubles team includes returning starter senior Angel Hernandez and sophomore Buddy Buchanon who is in the program for the first time.  The number two doubles team includes junior Krunal Bombaywala and freshman Payton Grant.

Liberal has a busy week playing at Buhler Tuesday against the Crusaders, Andover Central, and Valley Center.  Thursday the Redskins go to Dodge City where they will face the Red Demons, Garden City, Hays, Great Bend, and Meade.  Saturday at Garden City, the Skins face the Buffaloes, Dodge City, Great Bend, Hays, Meade, Scott City, and Colby.

LHS placed fifth at Great Bend and fourth at Hays in their first two tournaments.
