New MRI Machine Would Enhance Patient Care At Southwest Medical Center
01/29/2010

Southwest Medical Center in Liberal is currently looking to upgrade it’s facilities. In the plans are a new MRI machine which would replace the current machine, which is over 10 years old. Now this may not seem like a very old machine, but with technology changing, and the need to look at more areas of the body to assist physicians in early diagnosis of conditions, the upgrade is essential to patient care. Radiology Director Kelly Denton says the current MRI machine is a .3 with the proposed machine being a 1.5 Tesla. This would enable testing to expand from the current head, should, knee, elbow and spine, testing to include livers, breast and more detailed work in the abdomen. The new MRI machine would also cut the exam times by one third. Hospitals in Garden City and Dodge City are already using a 1.5 Tesla, and patients from Liberal and the surrounding area are currently having to travel to have these test done. The upgrade would eliminate the need to travel, which in turn would hasten the diagnosis time and better serve the patient. In Radiology alone 18,000 exams were performed in 2009 with 60% of those being outpatient and another 24% coming from the Emergency Room. The expansion, according to Denton, would help better flow those patients, and enable Southwest Medical Center to offer even better patient care.
