Huelskamp Doesn't Think Legislature Will Support State Sales Tax Increase

Kansas Governor Mark Parkinson has proposed a statewide one cent sales tax that would tax every item consumer’s purchase. State Senator Tim Huelskamp talked with kscbnews.net on Thursday about the proposed tax.

Huelskamp said the discussion has been very limited because there has been absolutely no support for what would be the largest tax increase in state history.

"There is a little misunderstanding I think amongst the public saying well its one percent. No, it's one cent for every purchase. Adding that on top of the bill as you go through the register it would be the largest tax increase in state history. We're talking about still massive layoffs, “Huelskamp said.

"The idea that we would raise taxes on every item we buy is something that is unacceptable to most members of the legislature."

Huelskamp said Parkinson is continuing to push it but that he doesn't think it will happen.
