Garden City Couple Had No Idea Escapee Was In Their Shed
01/12/2010

A Garden City couple says they had no idea a prison escapee was hiding in their storm shelter until law enforcement officials arrested him.

Officers found Mitchell Ebihara Jr. last week in the back yard of rental property where Tammy Perez and Vashon Telfair live. He had escaped Oct. 12 from the Kearny County Jail.

Telfair said he had knew Ebihara briefly about five years ago when they were in the Finney County Jail. He says he was stunned when officers found Ebihara in the storm shelter after searching Telfair's residence.

Police Sgt. Michael Reagle would not comment on whether Perez and Telfair are suspects in the case. Telfair was questioned and released after Ebihara was found.

Ebihara, who was from Garden City, was awaiting trial on an attempted murder charge in the January 2009 shooting of a man in Lakin.
