The Meade Buffaloes win the 2A state championship for the second time in three years 28-25 over Centralia Saturday afternoon at Lewis Field in Hays. Meade trailed this see-saw affair 13-7 at halftime. The game aired on 102.7.
Meade trailed 25-14 with a little over four minutes to play but rallied to win.
Jett Little's five yard TD run got Meade on the board in the first half. A Trevin Wiens two yard TD gave Meade a 14-13 lead in the second half. Centralia, who had won 20 consecutive games, scored the next two touchdowns to lead 25-14. A Chris Hardaway three yard pass to Jett Little made it 25-21 with just over three minutes to play.
And then the Buffs showed their resilience overcoming a couple of seemingly costly situations. First, they tried the on side kick, but couldn't recover it. The Meade defense stood tall holding the Panthers to a three and out. Then Meade blocked a punt and gave themselves good field position and two minutes with which to play.
But then Meade got what looked to be a costly intentional grounding call, giving them 3rd and long, with little time remaining.
Then Hardaway found Little for a 23 yard touchdown pass with 36 seconds remaining. Mark Finster intercepted a pass to seal the school's fourth state title.
Both teams finish 12-1.
It is Meade's fourth state football title after winning state in 1972, 1980, 2010, and 2012.
