Stanton County High School Principal Faces Criminal Charges
12/13/2009

A high school principal in western Kansas has a criminal case pending in the Kansas City area and plans to use a "mental defect" defense.

Court records show 36-year-old Craig D. Butler has a Jan. 4 trial scheduled in Johnson County District Court on charges of aggravated burglary, arson and criminal damage.

The charges were filed in August 2008, before he was hired as principal of Stanton County High School.

Court records also show he is charged in Johnson County with violating a protection-from-abuse order in October 2008.

Johnson County Assistant District Attorney Danetta Mendenhall confirmed the charges arose from a domestic situation with his wife.

Attorney David Shriver says the district was "certainly not aware of those charges" when Butler was hired.
