The fixed wing Model V35 Beechcraft airplane was flying from Oregon to Texas when pilot Harry Bladow, 77, of Independence, Oreg., decided to land because of weather conditions about 2:20 p.m.
During approach, the air speed indicator stopped working and the plane hit the runway too hard, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol. The plane snapped its landing gear off and slid about 100 meters into the runway safety zone. It ended up facing southwest on the fuselage.
Neither Bladow nor passenger Susan Bladow, 70, of Independence, Oreg., were injured.
