Young Redskins Open at Southwest Shootout
12/03/2009

Can Liberal's wrestling program remain one of the top five teams in 5A after losing eight seniors from last year's sixth place finish at state and fourth straight WAC title. Seven members of last year's senior class Nate Davis, Tyler Sutherland, Ricky Gomez, Chuy Torres, Alan Catalan, Victor Cruz, and Adam Meacham went to state a year ago. The Redskins return only senior Adrian Salsas (3rd at state) and sophomore Justin McPhail with state experience. Eighth year head coach Mike Pewthers says he greets the challenge of re-loading. "We're pretty young," Pewthers said. "We've got some kids who have come in as seniors and didn't wrestle and haven't wrestled in high school and I've got some returners who sat out a year but the kids have worked really hard. We have a great group of freshmen and sophomores as well in there." There are 42 boys out for wrestling at LHS who is just two years removed from a third place finish at state. If they are to pass defending state champ Emporia, Bishop Carroll, Lansing, and other contenders, young Redskins will have to lead the way. Liberal opens their season at the Southwest Shootout in Albuquerque's Rio Rancho High School Friday and Saturday. LHS will dual against Sand Creek, Las Lunas, Valley, Rio Rancho JV, and Amarillo Tascosa. The next dual win will be Pewthers' 100th. Here's Liberal's lineup:
