Garden City Man Sentenced in Shooting Death
10/12/2009

GARDEN CITY, Kan. (AP) - A Garden City man has been sentenced to

more than 51 years in prison in the February shooting death of

another man.

Twenty-four-year-old Lucas K. Chavez received the sentence

Friday in Finney County for second-degree murder and two counts of

criminal possession of a firearm.

Prosecutors said Chavez killed 30-year-old Philip M. Brown

because he believed Brown had made advances toward his girlfriend.

But Chavez had testified that another man shot Brown after an

argument about gang colors.

He said Friday that the judicial system is a disgrace and that

the "killer's still out there."

Chavez also was sentenced earlier in the week to 180 days for

intimidating a witness in the murder case. He will be able to serve

that sentence at the same time as the murder sentence.
