Has Silverstein's "Giving Tree" Been Found
07/12/2012

Has Shel Silverstein’s “The Giving Tree” been found. A large elm tree in North Blue Bonnet Park, who for many years, provided shade to the children and adults who utilize North Blue Bonnet Park for either Kids Inc. events or family outings, had come to the end of its life. The tree, which had given all it could give, could have easily been chopped down and turned into wood chips or burned in a landfill, but through the innovation of Jordan Mangold’s Beautification and Bill Houck’s Parks Department, City of Liberal employees have given the tree a new lease on “life”. Taking it upon themselves and their creative ways of thinking, these employees set out and painted this old tree bright, vibrant, new colors. This tree, which once was used mainly for shade, with its new look, has already brought excitement and many curiosity seekers to the Park. Comments from the public have already included, “Fantastic”, “Beautiful”, and “I Love It” among others. Hats off to all those involved for their initiative, creativity, and thinking outside the box. I guess a lesson can be learned from this old tree, as in Silverstein’s book, when you think you have given all you can give, there is always ways to give a little more.
