Great Bend Wins WAC Girls Tennis Title

Caitlin Workman and Kathy Nguyen compete against Hays at the WAC Tournament on the Rowley Tennis Courts.

Liberal hosted the W.A.C. Girls Tennis Invitational on Monday, October,5th. Great Bend took first place team honors with 14 points, Dodge City second place with 12 points, Hays finished third with 7 points, Liberal finished fourth place with 4 points, and Garden City finished fifth place with 3 points.

Individual Results:

Susan Nguyen went 3-1 finishing 2nd Place in Singles. She defeated Dodge City’s Hannah Thomas 8-6, defeated Garden City’s Paige Russell 8-2, lost to Great Bend’s Alby Harris 1-8, then bounced back to defeat Hays’ Jill Taylor 8-0 to earn 2nd Place.

Valerie Rito suffered an elbow injury and went 0-4 on the day in Single’s play. She lost to Dodge City’s Jenay Unruh 1-8, lost to Great Bend’s Amelie Comte 2-8, lost to Garden City’s Aimee Brandt 4-8, and lost to Hays’ Hanna Pfannentiel 2-8.

The Double’s Team of Caitlin Workman and Kathy Nguyen went 1-3 on the day. They lost to Dodge City’s Newton/Schubert 2-8, lost to Great Bend’s Buntain/Goad 2-8, lost to Hays’ Bannister/Kippes 3-8, then defeated Garden City’s Victor/Damien 8-2.

The Double’s Team of Shelby Hay and Lauren Harp went 0-4 on the day. They lost to Dodge City’s Newton/Schubert 3-8, lost to Great Bend’s Stoss/Hemmeke 1-8, lost to Garden City’s Sterling/Stewart 2-8, then lost to Hays’ Bird/Gagnon 3-8.

Playing #3 Singles, Kassandra Rosales went 0-3 on the day. She lost to Dodge City’s Kelly Brauer 0-8, lost to Great Bend’s Sophie McVay 0-8, then lost to Hays’ Whitney Hickert 3-8.

Our girls battled the wind all day just like all the other teams. We just didn’t adjust to it as well as others did. Lack of experience was evident in today’s performance. The Lady Redskins will travel to Salina to compete in Regional play on Saturday.
