What a Difference a Year Makes in Elkhart
09/02/2009

After back to back winless season in Elkhart, the 2A Wildcats won three of their last four in 2008 and narrowly missed the 2A playoffs. This year, there is optimism going into a football season for the first time in several years. There are 19 starters returning from last year's 3-6 team. Third year head coach Rob Wilson says so far, so good. "I've been really happy with how things have looked," Wilson said. "Most of our juniors and seniors have been starting since they were freshmen. This is five and six years they've been playing in this system."

Key Wildcats include: senior ol/de Ivan Moreno, senior ol/dl Yeset Pena, junior tb/lb Marcus Irsik, junior qb/db Ulises Prieto, and junior wb/cb Jordan Simmons. Last year Elkhart won three games in a row beginning with a win over Syracuse followed by wins over Satanta and Sublette. Wilson says that first win allowed his team to break through. "One of our main obstacles to winning last year was having the belief we could do it," Wilson said. "After we won that first game we had a huge increase in our confidence and I think that helped us in a lot against Sublette and definitely against Satanta. The kids have been able to come in and start where we ended last season."

Wilson will be a guest on the Sportsguys Wednesday morning at 7:37-9:00 on Talkradio 1270 and kscb.net.
