Southwestern Heights already looked good on paper. They were 4-5 last year but knew they would return most of that team in 2009. But when gunslinging Wes Winfrey transferred to Heights from Flower Mound, Texas, the Mustangs became even more potent. Sixth year head coach Ken Schoenrock is optimistic. "It's made a huge difference," Schoenrock said of Winfrey's arrival. "Wes showed up early in the spring last year. This summer, the boys got together and have been throwing and working on stuff. I didn't have to call anybody."
Schoenrock says having Winfrey, who's cousin Wade is a senior wide receiver and defensive back, will make the Mustangs more versatile. Oscar Sigala was last year's quarterback and moves to running back with Winfrey in toe. "With Oscar at quarterback he was an athlete and could do pretty much anything," Schoenrock said. "Now Oscar can just use his talent. This will let us open the offense. We have some receivers with good quickness and pretty good hands. We can use our receivers as more than blockers."
Winfrey says playing at Flower Mound will help him at the 3A school. "It's helped me a lot as far as knowing what to do in certain situations so I can come up here and really help these guys out and hopefully be a good leader and take us deep in the playoffs," Winfrey said.
Sigala says the move to running back is a relief. "It's great," Sigala said. "I don't have to scramble so much anymore so it's awesome for me. We have a great quarterback with great leadership and skills. With the great seniors we have this year, I know we can make something happen."
Senior wr/db Daniel Gutierrez will likely be one of Winfrey's top targets. He says the Pony Express will ride in '09. "Wreak havoc and leave is our motto right now," Gutierrez said. "We just want to arrive, do what we have to do and get out of there. Last year was pretty disappointing because we weren't really prepared mentally. But this year we have everything put together. We'll have a good season."
Other key Mustangs include 6'7" 240 pound senior lineman Cory Ryan, senior fb/lb Tyrel Justice, senior te/deJacob Flores, junior lineman James Able, and senior wr/db Wade Winfrey. The Mustangs were featured during the Sportguys Friday morning. They will appear at Billy's for the season opening edition of On the Sidelines at 6:00 PM Thursday night on 102.7 and kscb.net.
