Negotiations Continue On Budget Cuts

KSCB News - March 10, 2011 8:10 am

Kansas legislators are making progress in
the task of cutting spending in the current state budget.
The House and Senate have approved separate budget-cutting
bills. Negotiators from the two chambers met throughout the day
Wednesday, then adjourned with plans to resume talks Thursday on
their remaining differences.
They’re trying to satisfy Gov. Sam Brownback’s request to trim
spending in the fiscal year ending June 30 and save some $35
million.
The biggest lingering issue is how to cover a shortfall in
funding for special education. States are required to maintain
their financial commitment to special education each year or face a
loss in federal funds.
