Miss Liberal Contestants to be featured on B107.5 on Saturday Morning

KSCB News - February 11, 2010 12:00 am

This year’s Miss Liberal contestants will be guests on B107.5 FM on Saturday morning to preview their run for the crown. The contestants visited KSCB on Thursday with some more set to visit on Friday to talk about the competition and some other fun things about themselves that you won’t find out anywhere else. This year’s Miss Liberal participants are Kayla Varnes, Valerie Rito, Barbara Naegle, Shenice Morton, Elisabeth Kerbow, Lydia Young, Emily Jackson, Kelsi Moree, and Jordan Eder.

Executive Director of 13 years Lu Haynes also talked with KSCB. Haynes is very excited about the nine girls who have entered and said they are all winners. She went on to say that this is much more then just a beauty contest. Haynes said the girls have had to fill out alot of paper work and have worked very hard to prepare participating in mock interviews and coming up with a platform and talent.

Haynes has helped make the Miss Liberal competition one of the best pageants in the state of Kansas. It often leads the state in scholarship dollars. This year Haynes said there is $7,000 in scholarships to give away. Haynes added that the scholarship money is sent straight to the college that the contestant chooses and is not handed out in cash.

Haynes also praised many of the former Miss Liberal’s including last year’s reigning crown holder Elizabeth Rohloff. Haynes has helped past winners such as Adrienne Rosel who went on to win Miss Kansas. She also was in charge when Shameem Kaufmann won Miss Liberal and went on to place two years in a row at Miss Kansas.

Haynes added that with Miss Liberal falling on Valentine’s Day this year that it is the perfect gift for sons to take their mothers, or boyfriends to take their girlfriends. She said it is unique and should be taken advantage of.

The contestants visit to KSCB included answering some questions about why they decided to run, what their future plans are, and five short questions that will include them telling about their favorite ice cream. They also even found a little time to request some songs.

The feature will air on B107.5 FM in four short segments on Saturday between 8 a.m. – 10 a.m. The Miss Liberal competition will take place on Sunday at the Maskus Auditorium at Liberal High School at 2 p.m. Miss Kansas will be in Liberal to co-host the event along with local TV personality Chris Jewell. Pre-sale tickets are available for $7 at Rick’s Hair Design, First National Bank, and Sunflower Bank. Tickets will also be available at the door for $8.
