McVey and Cathey Break Redskin Records

Liberal junior quarterback Slader McVey and wide receiver Jade Cathey made 2009 a record breaking football season. McVey broke the single season passing record with 1,663 yards. He was 111-209 passing with 18 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. The 5’9″ McVey tossed six touchdowns with one interception the final two games against undefeated Bishop Carroll and Hutchinson. Mark Grande held the record until Slader’s season. Grande passed for 1,346 in 2004. Sheldon Pipkin tossed 985 yards in 2003. McVey now will eye Grande’s career mark of 2,373 in 2004 and 2005. McVey has 1,942 passing yards which trails Lamar Chapman ‘s 2,023 yards (1992-94) and Pipkin’s 2,094 yards (2001-03). Cathey set the single season LHS records with 770 yards and 46 catches to go along with 10 touchdowns. The 6’5″ wideout broke Lane Hensley’s record of 714 receiving yards in 2004 and Ken Sherman’s record for receptions with 41 in 2003.
