Liberal’s Westerman Player of the Week Again

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State’s Shelbi Stewart and Taryn Westerman gained Lone Star Conference Player of the Week honors Tuesday when the league announced its weekly awards.

Stewart, who earned offensive honors, continued her hot play with a pair of 13-kill performances to lead the Mustangs to a pair of LSC wins last week at Texas A&M-Commerce and Texas Woman’s University.

The sophomore from Pflugerville rode a career-best .600 attack percentage to 13 kills while committing just one error in a four-set win Thursday night over the Lions.

She then notched her third double-double of the season with 13 kills and 10 digs to help MSU upend TWU Saturday in Denton.

Stewart averaged 3.25 kills and 1.62 digs per set with a .489 attack percentage for the week.

Westerman earned top setter mention with a pair of all-around performances.

The junior from Liberal, Kan. notched third double-double of the season in a four-set win over TAMUC Thursday night while directing the MSU offense to a .203 attack percentage with 34 set assists and 11 digs.

Westerman followed the effort with her best performance of the season in another four-set victory on Saturday as she piloted the Mustangs to a .236 team attack percentage with 43 assists and added 10 digs, eight total blocks and five kills.

Westerman posted all-around averages of 9.62 set assists, 1.62 digs and 1.25 blocks per set.

Midwestern State returns to D.L. Ligon Coliseum for two crucial conference matches including a 7 p.m. showdown with Southwestern Oklahoma on Thursday before taking on Central Oklahoma Saturday at 2 p.m.
