Liberal City Commission Meets, Accepts Housing Grant

The Liberal City Commission met Tuesday evening for their regularly scheduled meeting. To start off the meeting, The commission read two proclamations, one proclaiming National Family Literacy Day and the other National American Indian Heritage Month. The commission approved the acceptance of a $350,000.00 grant from the Kansas Housing Corporation.This grant will be contributed to the development of 48 apartments, which could be used for water, sewer, and streets. The commision approved the placing of the City Bus Title VI Public Rights, the appointment of Linda McMechan to the Liberal Housing Authority Board and into agreements with the Mid America Air Museum Foundation and the Florida Museum of Natural History for the Megalodon, Largest Shark That Ever Lived Exhibit. This exhibit is set to open in 2015. Also for the Air Museum, the Commission approved expending $10, 200.00 for the restoration of the USMC F-8 Crusader aircraft. Randy’s Sandblasting of Liberal will do the work. The Commission also approved transfering $772,970.00 from the One Cent sales tax for a mill, overlay, curb and guttering on South Kansas Avenue. This is Phase 1 of a 3 Phase project. This Phase will run from Pine Street to the Railroad tracks. Commissioners also entered into discussion regarding the creation of a Housing Board and a Building Board. Concenus of the Commission was to continue discussions on the subject. After a 20 minute executive session, the Commissionapproved a pay increase for the City Manager, Mark Hall, in accordance with the City’s policy. The next meeting of the Liberal City Commission will be November 12th.
