LHS Girls Tennis Players Narrowly Miss State

Brock Kappelmann - October 8, 2018 5:50 am

The Lady Redskins earned respect from the State when Rebecca Irby was voted
the 6th Seed in our Regional tournament by coaches. She held up her seed
by defeating Bello from Wichita North 6-3 and 6-0. Sophomore Priscilla
Vasquez upset the 8th seed , Fee, from Hutchinson 6-0 and 6-4. With quick
starts, it looked like Liberal would send two singles players to State.
Irby led Alcantar from Garden City 4-2 before

Falling 7-5 and 1-6. In a best-two-out-of- three sets, Vasquez won the
first set against Beals of Campus 6-4. Beals won the second set 6-4, and
Vasquez wilted in the heat to lose the third set 6-0. Our singles players

were so close to qualifying for State. The doubles teams of Riddhi
Bombaywala/Jazzy Monge and Jaciana Rivera/Alejandra Ortega battled top seeds
losing in the first round. Overall, the move to 6A will benefit

our program. As always, our girls carried themselves with pride and grace
representing our school well.
