LHS Girls Finish in Middle of the Pack in Garden

Tennis Results for the Garden City Varsity Tournament

Twelve teams vied for top honors at the Garden City Varsity Tennis Tournament on Saturday. Competing teams included Maize South, Pratt, Colby, Ulysses, Scott City, Dodge City, Great Bend, Hays, Meade, and two teams from Garden City. Liberal’s team place in the middle of the pack with 19 points while Maize South dominated with 46 points and Great Bend with 35.

Individual results:

#1 Singles—Maddie Rees went 2-2 on the day. Playing her best match of the year, she battled Garden City’s top player, Claire Schmidt, losing 8-6. She lost to another strong opponent in Pratt’s Adel Loomis, 8-2. Then, Maddie defeated Scott City’s Holly Wilcoxson 8-1 and Garden City’s Andrea Villela 8-2 to take 9 th Place.

#2 Singles—Lauren Harp went 3-3 on the day finishing in 6 th Place. She started out with an impressive 8-1 win over Scott City’s Brianna Emahizer. Then, she lost against a quality opponent, Jade Hoover, from Pratt losing 8-1. She rattled off wins against Garden City’s Amber Miller 8-3, and Meade’s Rhyan Elliot 8-2. Then, she lost to Garden City’s Bryttany Landon 8-2 and Hays’ Brooke Forinash 8-3 to take 6 th Place.

#1 Doubles—Jaycee Darroch/Stephanie Sanchez went 2-2 finishing 9 th Place. They lost a close match to Garden City’s team of Keller/Martinez 8-6. Then in a match much closer than the score indicates, they lost to Meade’s Harshberger/Flowers 8-3. They bounced back with wins over Dodge City’s Keten/Flores 8-4 and Colby’s Lindberg/Rall 8-2 to win 4 points for our team.

#2 Doubles—Alicia Collins and Jordyn Apsley made a splash in their very first match together. Playing their first varsity tournament, these girls pushed a veteran Garden City team of Pastrana/Doll to a tie breaker, losing 8-7 (7-1). They lost to a hard-serving team from Meade, Lurwick/Green 8-2. Then, they rallied to gain wins over Scott City’s Artz/Miller 8-5 and Colby’s Schindler/Williams 8-5 to take 9 th Place.
