LHS Boys Tennis Wins Ulysses and Takes Fourth at Emporia

The Liberal Redskins took 1st Place at the Ulysses Invitational Tennis Tournament on Monday, April 27. Competing teams included Ulysses, SW Heights, Scott City, Meade, Goodland, Cimarron, and Colby.

Individual Results:

#1 Singles–Rogelio Alvarez went 4-0 finishing 1st Place. He defeated Colby’s Jeremy Harter 6-0, defeated Cimarron’s Jordan Toothaker 6-0, defeated Goodland’s Simon Grunfeld 6-0, then defeated Meade’s Jared Friesen 6-2 to finish 1st Place.

#1 Doubles–Duc Nguyen/Hai Vo went 3-1 finishing 2nd Place. They defeated Colby’s Grey Henry/Jordan Hockersmith 6-4, defeated Cimarron’s Matt Kleiwer/Saige Martinez 6-0, defeated Goodland’s Ryan Irvin/Bryan Gray 6-4 before losing in the final to Scott City’s Matt Noll/Corbin Janssen 2-6 to finish 2nd Place.

#2 Singles–Vince Nguyen went 4-0 finishing 1st Place. He defeated Colby’s Jared Bixenman 6-5, defeated Cimarron’s Charles Shaughnessy 6-0, defeated Goodland’s Hazen Deeds 6-1, then defeated Scott City’s Jordan Snow 6-5 to take 1st Place.

#2 Doubles–Josh Hamilton/Bryan Murillo went 4-0 finishing 1st Place. They defeated Colby’s Sam Matzek/Justin Slavens 6-5, defeated Cimarron’s Matt Whekamp/Charles Blattner 6-1, defeated Goodland’s Celeb Fugleberg/Garrett Geist 6-4, then defeated Ulysses’ Victor Rivera/Sergio Perez in the final 6-4 to finish 1st Place.

On Tuesday, April 28, the Redskins competed against some of the best tennis teams in the state at the Emporia Invitational Tennis Tournament to prepare themselves for the Regional tournament coming up next Thursday. Liberal finished 4th Place. Competing teams included McPherson, Washburn Rural, Emporia, Wichita East, and Manhatten.

Individual Results:

#1 Singles–Rogelio Alvarez went 2-1 finishing 2nd Place. He defeated McPherson’s Aden Lindholm 8-0, defeated Manhatten’s Logan Sylvester 8-3 before losing in the final to Washburn’s Daniel de Zamacona 0-8 to finish 2nd Place.

#1 Doubles–Landon Harp/Aaron Schaffer went 1-2 finishing 5th Place. They lost to McPherson’s Nathan Wehrman/Mark Gayer 1-8, Lost to Manhatten’s Kenton Hallowell/Elliot Goe 3-8, then defeated Wichita Easts’ Eric Yang/Alex Hwu 8-3 to finish 5th Place.

#2 Singles–Hai Vo went 1-2 finishing 5th Place. He lost to McPherson’s Daniel Allmon 3-8, lost to Manhatten’s Dylan Johnson 1-8, then defeated Emporia’s Todd Koelsch 8-1 to finish 5th Place.

#2 Doubles–Duc Nguyen/Vince Nguyen went 2-1 finishing 3rd Place. They lost to McPherson’sTyler Singleton/Corey Horton 4-8, defeated Manhatten’sThomas Fullagar/Rich Potts-Moore 8-3, then defeated Wichita East’s Alex Applegate/Edward Nola 8-6 to finish 3rd Place.
