Lady Skins Hold Down Winfield 29-25

KSCB News - March 5, 2010 12:00 am

The strategy worked. Liberal led Winfield 25-22 with 6:30 to play and Justice Norah on the bench with four fouls. LHS head coach Shane Stout decided it was time to run some clock in their 29-25 win over Winfield at the ‘Big House’ Thursday night. Liberal had missed a handful of lay ups and had many traveling violations whistled against them. So Liberal stalled. No one scored in the game from the 6:30 mark to the 1:57 mark until Liberal’s Melissa Williams sank two free throws to give Liberal a 27-22 lead. Liberal would lead 28-22 until a Winfield three pointer made it 28-25. Liberal didn’t secure the win until Kayla Varnes pulled down a rebound on a missed free throw with 2.9 second left. Varnes made the first free throw to secure the win. Stout says the strategy paid off. “Justice had four fouls so she was in foul trouble,” Stout said. “I seemed like we were attacking the basket and getting to the rim and missed several layups. We were getting called on all sorts of travels so as a coaching staff we said let’s just milk it out and we did.” Liberal’s Justice Norah scored 13 as Liberal improves to 12-9. Liberal jumped out on the Lady Vikings 10-0 and 13-2 at the end of one quarter. Liberal led 21-4 and it was 21-7 at the half. The Lady Skins scored the first two points of the second half to lead 23-7 before Winfield’s 15-2 run. Liberal wins their third consecutive sub state opener. They play 21-0 Andover Central Saturday evening at 5:30 at Andover High School on Talkradio 1270.
