Lady Saints Hammer Red Devils by 61

Brock Kappelmann - December 7, 2017 6:22 am

LIBERAL, Kan. – Some days, it appears nothing can go wrong. Wednesday night’s game against Allen was of one of those days for the No. 16 Seward County women’s basketball team, as they throttled the Red Devils for the second largest margin of victory in the series history, winning 108-47.

Seward (8-2, 6-2) exploded out of the gates with an 8-2 run in the first two minutes of the game, with Mollie Monsey responsible for four of the points. The Lady Saints went on a 7-0 run to make it 15-2 before the Red Devils stopped the run. However, another layup by Mounsey kickstarted an 10-0 over the final five minutes of the first quarter to take a sizable lead, 25-4.

The Lady Saints shot 50 percent from the field in the first quarter, and it would only get better from there. The four points scored by Allen is the least that Seward has allowed in a quarter this season, while holding the Red Devils to just 12.5 percent from the floor.

The two teams traded points through the first three minutes of the second quarter, before the Lady Saints went on an 11-0 run to make the score 49-14 with four minutes left in the quarter. Silvia Veloso scored six of the points of the span of the run. The Lady Saints entered halftime, leading 57-20.

At the halfway point, the Lady Saints had made 22 of 35 shots (62.9%). The Red Devils on the other hand, made just 8 of 31 attempts (25.8%).

The Lady Saints started the third quarter with a 6-0 run, but the Red Devils finally had an answer for Seward, going on their own 12-4 run to make the score 68-32. However, as much of the night had gone, the Lady Saints had yet another answer for Allen, ending the third quarter on a 15-2 run to take an even 50-point lead, 84-34.

Seward began the fourth quarter how they finished the third, by going on a 11-4 run over the first four minutes. The lead maxed out at the 2:28 mark, with the Lady Saints winning 104-40. The Red Devils trimmed the deficit to 61 by the time the final buzzer went off.

This marks the first time since last season that the Lady Saints scored 100 in a conference game, when they defeated Dodge City 102-43. Seward finished shooting 41 for 66 (69.2%) from the field. The percentage is a season-high for the Lady Saints.

After scoring only four points in the previous game, Mounsey bounced back to score a season-high 34 points, the second highest point total of her career. Carla Covane and Vilma Covane joined Mounsey in the double-figures, as Carla scored 11 points and Vilma came off the bench to add 13.

Seward will be on the road for their next three games. They will travel to Neosho County on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. to take on the Panthers, before heading west to take on Scottsdale and Mesa in their final two non-conference games. The Neosho game airs Saturday on 107.5 and kscbnews.net with Saints Shoot-around at 1:45.
