Lady Saints Continue to Roll in Homecoming Win

Brock Kappelmann - January 28, 2018 11:11 am

LIBERAL, Kan. – The No. 12 Seward County Lady Saints set out with a purpose on Saturday night, looking to get revenge against one of the two opponents that beat them this year, taking down Barton 72-37 in commanding fashion.

Seward County (19-2, 15-2) put together a tremendous response to November’s nine-point loss to the Cougars in Great Bend. The Lady Saints began the game by scoring the first 14 points. It wasn’t until a Natash Dolinsky jumper with three minutes left to play that Barton got on the scoreboard. A three-point play on the Cougars next possession would be all the points they could muster, as Seward finished on a 10-0 run to take a 26-5 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Lady Saints held the Cougars to just 2 of 16 (12.5%) from the field in the first quarter. Meanwhile, Seward shot 45.8 percent (11 of 24 from the floor).

The second quarter was much of the same for the Lady Saints, scoring the first six points. The Cougars went on a brief 5-0 run, but Seward quickly halted their momentum with back-to-back Brennyn Seagler three-pointers. The Lady Saints ended the quarter on a 9-2, making the score 51-15 at the break.

The pace slowed down for the Lady Saints in the third quarter, scoring a game-low 10 points in the quarter. Lexi Hernandez was responsible for seven of the points, going three for four from the field including a three, while Seagler added the other three points. Despite a slower pace, the Lady Saints kept the Cougars to just 10 points, holding on to their 36-point lead.

By the fourth quarter, Seward had pulled their starters, but Barton still struggled to find the net, shooting just 25 percent (4 of 16) from the floor and 28.6 percent (2 of 7) from behind the arc. While the Lady Saints shoot just 29.4 percent in the quarter, it was good enough to hold on to their substantial lead, winning 72-37.

Twelve Lady Saints got in the scoring column in the game, with Vanessa Caro (13 pts) and Lexi Hernandez (12 pts) leading all scorers. Caro’s point total was a career-high for the sophomore, as she shot 6 of 8 from the floor.

The Lady Saints connected on 46.3 percent (31 of 67) of their shots and 32.1 percent (9 of 28) from behind the arc. Barton was held to 23.7 percent (14 of 59) from the floor and 25 percent (5 of 20) from deep. Seward forced the Cougars into 24 turnovers, collecting 29 points off them.

The Lady Saints will go on a two-game road stretch, beginning with a match-up against the Pratt Beavers at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday (Jan. 31). Pratt will live-stream the game and it can be heard on 107.5 KSCB with Brock Kappelmann (pxp) on the call.
