Lady Saints Bring in New Assistant Coach

KSCB News - July 1, 2014 7:08 am

Seward County Lady Saints Head Coach Toby Wynn continued his successful roll of bringing talented Assistant Coaches on board his staff on Tuesday as it has been announced that former UTEP star Kelli Willingham has been named the Lady Saints new Assistant Coach.

Willingham joins the Lady Saints staff after finishing up an incredible playing career at UTEP which saw her lead the Miners to a Conference USA Championship, a Conference USA Tournament Championship, an NCAA Tournament appearance, and a WNIT Championship appearance. A four year starter and rare four year team captain for UTEP, Willingham scored over 1,000 points in her storied career with the Miners. She holds the school’s all-time record for career starts as well as three-pointers made. Willingham led the Miners to a historic season in 2013-2014 as UTEP racked up 29 wins and she averaged 10 points per game in 31 contests. Also a star in the classroom, Willingham was a member of the Conference USA All-Academic Team during her sophomore and junior years and was awarded the Conference USA Commissioner’s Medal for her work off the court.

A native of DeSoto, Texas, Willingham starred for DeSoto High before her days at UTEP. She led the Eagles to a State Tournament appearance as a sophomore and was the District MVP during her senior year.

Wynn said of Willingham’s hiring "Kelli has been very successful as a player at the highest level of college basketball and we look for her to bring that to our program at Seward. As a four year captain, she has developed great leadership qualities that will help her be a successful coach. She also has coaching in her blood, with her dad being the coach of one of the best AAU teams in Texas and her brother also working with that program. Having played for a winning program and a very good coaching staff at UTEP, I look for Kelli to bring a winning and competitive attitude to Seward County that will help us immediately."
