Kansas Republicans To Hold Caucus

KSCB News - February 6, 2012 8:18 am

Five states down, with forty-five states to go for the Republican Party to find their nominee to challenge President

Barack Obama in November. Kansas Republicans will have the chance to decide who will get the 40 delegates that

Kansas is allotted on Saturday, March 10.

All but two counties in the state will hold local caucus sites including Seward County. The site for Seward will be in the James

Maskus Auditorium at Liberal High School at 10 a.m. on March 10. Registration will begin at 9 a.m. Voting will begin following the

caucus meeting which will conclude at around 10:30. Voting will be open until 1 p.m. To be eligible to vote in the caucus you must be a

registered Republican from the state of Kansas.

Some states hold caucuses while others hold primaries. The difference is a caucus is put on by the Republican Party of each county

who then report the numbers to the state party. The numbers of each local caucus are then all totaled together. A caucus also includes

a representative from each candidate on the ballot to speak for a short period about their candidate. Before voting can begin this process

must take place. In a primary, each county’s official election office is in charge and it takes place just like any other election. Many states

such as Kansas opt to do a caucus instead of a primary to save money.

Seward County Republican Chairman Reid Petty is in charge of the caucus for Seward County and is excited for it.

"It has been a very entertaining race for the nomination so far and to have a chance for the citizens of Kansas to participate is exciting. Our caucus

will be just four days after Super Tuesday and we will be the only state holding a caucus or primary that day," Petty said.

Petty hopes for a big turn out encourages all registered Republicans to mark their calendars for March 10.

"This is one of the most important elections of our lifetime, and so I challenge our community to show up to the caucus to vote. We must find an alternative

to the disaster that is the Obama Presidency."

If you are currently not a registered voter, the deadline to register as a Republican to be eligible to vote in the caucus is on Monday, February 13.

To register you must go to the County Clerk’s office, which is located in the Seward County Administration Building at 515 N. Washington.

A reminder that Photo I.D. is now required in the state of Kansas to register to vote. The Kansas Republican Party will also require a

Photo I.D. to participate in the March 10 caucus.

If anyone has any questions about the caucus, you can contact Petty at [email protected] .
