Kansas Republican Caucus To Be Held Saturday

KSCB News - March 6, 2012 8:16 am

For the first time in 20 years, residents who are registered Republicans in Seward County will have a

chance to cast their vote for who they would like to see as the party’s nominee for President of the United States.

From 1996-2004, the Kansas Republican State Committee decided who would receive the delegates from Kansas. In 2008, Kansas had a caucus, but Seward County chose not to participate. The last time Seward County voters did have a say was in 1992, when there was a state wide primary that George Bush Sr. won.

Seward County Republican Chairman Reid Petty, who is in his second year as Chair said he is excited to be in charge of this historic event on Saturday.

"I hope that the voters are as excited as I am to have their first opportunity in 20 years to have a say in who the we select as our nominee," Petty said.

Kansas has 40 delegates to be awarded on Saturday during the caucus. It is not winner takes all. They will be divided up on who receives the most statewide votes, who wins each district in the state, and by what order they finish in statewide.

The Seward County caucus will take place at James Maskus Auditorium in Liberal High School. The doors will open at 9 a.m. on Saturday, with the caucus scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Voting will take place immediately following the caucus at approximately 10:30, and will last until 1 p.m. Voters are required to show a state issued I.D., such as a driver’s license to vote. Voter registration cards are not necessary, and advanced or absentee ballots are not allowed. Any Kansas resident who is a registered Republican can vote in Saturday’s caucus.
