Landfill Maintenance & Equipment Operator

Position located in Liberal, KS

The Maintenance position is responsible for the development and maintenance of the Seward County Landfill grounds and cleaning of buildings. A substantial amount of time is spent outside during the spring, summer and autumn of the year.


This position requires an individual with a high degree of focus, concentration and an ability to pay attention to details.

Essential Functions for Grounds Maintenance

  1. Supervises care and maintenance of lawns, shrubbery, flower gardens, trees and parking lots
  2. Cuts grass and trims bushes, as required
  3. Uses fertilizers on bushes, flowers, trees and in park gardens, as required
  4. Waters grass areas, shrubbery, flowers and trees, as required
  5. Cleans bathroom and kitchen facilities
  6. Requisitions materials, supplies and equipment used in maintenance work


Essential Functions for General Maintenance

  1. Supervise and maintain buildings and building structures which includes:
    1. Stairwells
    2. Exterior and interior lighting (change bulbs, as required)
    3. Electrical fixtures
    4. Plumbing fixtures
    5. Mechanical fixtures

Additional Responsibilities

  1. Maintains a professional image in the community
  2. Maintains a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating in a manner that is customer focused with the general public, clients, co-workers and management
  3. Performs other related work, as required by the Landfill Director

 Knowledge of

  1. Principles and procedures for providing internal and external customer service; this includes assessing the needs of both to meet quality standards for services and to meet evaluation of customer satisfaction
  2. Seward County Employee Manual
  3. Installation and maintenance of drip and large turf irrigation systems
  4. Proper handling of herbicides, fertilizers, fuel, paints and other materials used in maintenance work
  5. Operating characteristics of tractors, mowers, rollers, utility vehicles and power hand tools
  6. Proper structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition and correct grammar


High School Diploma or GED required. Minimum of one (1) year of work experience in maintenance and/or grounds keeping. Must possess valid Driver’s License, without record of suspension or revocation in any state; no felony convictions or disqualifying criminal history.
