Job Summary

The Detention Officer is responsible for the care, treatment and confinement of prisoners housed in the Seward County Jail.

The Detention Officer’s position requires some degree of independent judgment, mental acuity, strong decision making and problem solving; the Detention Officer may be required to consider different courses of action or deviate from standard operating procedures in the course of his work.

The Detention Officer’s work entails frequent contact with the general public.

The roles, responsibilities, job functions, knowledge, skills and abilities set forth herein may be revised from time to time in order to comply with federal and state laws, departmental needs and the changing requirements for this position.

Supervision Exercised or Received

The Detention Officer receives supervision from the Jail Sergeant or the Officer in Charge (OIC)

The Detention Officer exercises supervision over no other employees


Essential Functions

  1. Processes intake and release of inmates into Seward County Jail
  2. Maintains record of prisoner identification and charges
  3. Monitors conduct of prisoner in housing unit or during work or recreational activities to prevent escape or violence; determines needs, on individual basis, on internal relocation of inmates
  4. Manages the intake of property and monies
  5. Inspects conditions of locks, window bars, grills, doors and gates at Seward County Jail to ensure security to prevent escape
  6. Inspects in-coming mail for presence of contraband
  7. Performs cell inspections
  8. Manages and/or monitors inmate visitations
  9. Manages use of televisions in Seward County Jail
  10. Monitors and performs searches and/or shake downs in Seward County Jail for inmate contraband, drugs, etc., as required
  11. Observes inmate activities and/or behavior to detect any prohibited or unusual behavior that might be a threat to the security of the facility or the safety of prisoners, employees and/or visitors
  12. Dispenses medications, as appropriate or as needed, in absence of Medical Detention Officer
  13. Passes food trays, as needed
  14. Passes mail, as needed
  15. Transports inmates to court or to doctor’s offices or hospital, as required
  16. Monitors and enforces office policies, processes and procedures
  17. Resolves staff and/or inmate conflicts and/or complaints; negotiates and settles disputes; resolves grievances and/or conflicts
  18. Reviews, prepares and maintains reports and records, as required
  19. Assumes command of grave or unusual conditions
  20. Enforces rules and regulations pertaining to inmates
  21. Patrols the jail facility several times during each tour of duty/shift ensuring that safety and security pertaining to the jail are followed
  22. Greets and interacts with the public, giving direction, as needed
  23. Answers phone inquiries
  24. Works 12 hour shifts: 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.; 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m., rotating quarterly
  25. Follows safety procedures and practices
  26. Follows department policies and procedures
  27. Maintains direct contact with inmates
  28. Monitors surveillance cameras and responds to personal inmate requests via intercom
  29. Opens and closes controlled access points for authorized personnel
  30. Monitors emergency notification equipment and properly responds, if activated
  31. Accounts for keys and equipment at the post
  32. Tracks computer screens to input inmate data
  33. Provides documentation of visitation
  34. Writes detailed reports, as necessary
  35. Maintains jail calendar for the number of prisoners in the Seward County Jail
  36. Responsible for lock down of inmates and insuring lights and televisions are off, at appropriate times
  37. Responsible for checking the grounds for unlocked doors
  38. Maintains paperwork for the jail, e.g., logs and discipline reports
  39. Distributes medications to prisoners, in place of Medical Detention Officer
  40. Escorts prisoners to court hearings and attorney meetings
  41. Performs finger printing
  42. Greets and interacts with the public, giving direction, as needed
  43. Answers phone inquiries in keeping with policy and procedures
  44. Works 12 hour shifts: 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., rotating quarterly
  45. Follows safety procedures and practices
  46. Follows department policies and procedures

Work Hours 42 Hour Work Week – Full Time; 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.; 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m., rotating days off Evening/Week-Ends As necessary Work Environment General indoor and outdoor work environments; some exposure to inclement weather and extreme temperatures. Exposure to noxious odors and high decibels of noise; may be exposed to prisoner related health hazards that may include blood and other bodily fluids, communicable diseases and human borne parasites. Physical Requirements The work of a Detention Officer is a highly responsible position which requires mental acuity. He will be frequently required to sit for an hour or more, talk or hear, stand, walk, must handle or operate objects, tools or controls and reach with hands and arms; occasionally required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, taste or smell; specific vision abilities required and include focus, close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perceptions and ability to adjust focus; the foregoing are part of the Detention Officer’s daily routine. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The Detention Officer may be required to lift or move objects in excess of 25 pounds. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
